After studying both science and humanity subjects at school I was unsure about which degree to study.
I settled on BSc Archaeology as this was the perfect mixture of disciplines,
nurturing my love for chemistry, history and computer science. After graduating in 2014 I began my
MSc in Web Science. Web Science is an interesting mixture of social science and computer science,
focusing on understanding human nature through digital means. I graduated in 2015 and began my PhD
soon after. My focus is understanding the evolving narratives of space through social media posts. More
specifically, I extract location data from Twitter and map activities within locations (all anonymously!).
Doing this required learning Python for data cleaning and stastistics and R for mapping and spatial analytics.
My current project involves working in partnership with HM Treasury to detect, extract and track real-time economic
indicators through Twitter posts. These tweets highlight the impact of economic change on the population as well as
potentially indicating a trend in economic prosperity. Results coming soon!
